The History of Fire
Deadline: Monday, October 8, 2012 by 08:00

Picture
The use of fire by early humans is one of the most important discoveries ever made. The discovery of how to control fire is hard to say, but historians have evidence that at least 500,000 years ago, early humans were using fire for their basic needs.

In spring 2012, new evidence was found in Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa that humans had possibly controlled fire approximately 1,000,000 years ago! (Please click on the tab above Chapter 1: Earliest Human Societies for a news article on this incredible finding!)

The question for this week's blog is this:

  • How did early humans know how to start fire? List three possible ways that early humans may have learned how to control fire.

Hint: Watch the short video, Quest for Fire. Caveman in Trouble, by Ed Barnes for some possible answers.
